Day 3 Norway in a Nutshell

After riding the transit system around  Oslo last night, we take the local bus back to Sissel’s flat.  She had dinner waiting for us in the fridge.  On our walk from the bus stop, we stopped at the local market for breakfast fixings.  As we were choosing our food, one of the employees asked us if we wanted a recommendation for cheese.  Sure, Norway is famous for it’s cheese.  But only a few are the best.  He told us he could “argue about cheese all day”.  We told him he would win the argument since we knew nothing about Norwegian cheese!  We purchased his favorite, Gudbrandsdalsost. A dark brown (!) cheese. Pretty strong flavor, but very creamy.  Very unique.

Up at 5am to eat and walk the four blocks back to the bus stop to take the bus to the main train station.  Mass transit is everywhere in Europe, you just have to take the time and energy to figure it out. And be willing to ask when you are stumped.

If you tour Norway, you have to do “Norway in a Nutshell”.  It is a series of trains, a bus and ferry to visit the western fjords on the way to Bergen on the coast.  The fjords are best seen in the summer, with a crush of tourists.  Few tourists this time of year, but the weather……cloudy and a bit rainy.  We got the yellows of the trees, and the whites of all the waterfalls, but missed the blues of the sky.
