Day 2 Oslo, City Hall, Frogner Park and Gustav Vigeland

As mentioned yesterday, Sissel had lunch ready to eat at her flat.  We ate, then she dropped us off in downtown Oslo.  She then she left for a 10 day holiday of her own in Sweden.  Our first stop, after the TI, Tourist Information, was City Hall right on the water front.  It was started before World War I, but not completed till 1950, it’s grand opening to celebrates Norway’s 900th anniversary.  Other than its cavernous interior and murals by its greatest artists depicting life in Norway, it is also the location of the yearly Nobel Peace Prize Banquet each December.

The primary destination for the afternoon was to see the work of Gustav Vigland in Frogner Park.  For 19 years, from 1924-1943, he and his workers crafted 192 bronze and granite statue groupings depicting 600 figures in all.  Frogner Park is 75 acres and stunning.  The The centerpiece is the Monolith.  With 36 granite groups and 121 carved figures.  It took 14 years to create it.  A few pictures.
